Palestinians arrest 24 anti govt demonstrators in west bank

Palestinian police have arrested 24 anti-government protesters in response the death of a Nizar Banat who was an outspoken critic of the Palestinian authority who died in custody on June 24 not long after being arrested.

Banat’s family has said he was beaten as he was taken out of his home and has accused the Palestinian Authority of trying to cover up the death.

Louay Arzeigat the police spokesperson issued a statement saying, the demonstrators had not received a permit and “refused to sign the conditions for the gathering.” although they would not elaborate on what those conditions are.

Al-Haq, a Palestinian human rights organization condemning the Palestinian forces for making the arrests and has accused what many call a corrupt and violent government of “attacking the rights and freedoms guaranteed by law.”

It has called for the immediate release of the protesters.
