New York City forcing city workers to get the vaccine, or they will face weekly testing

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Monday that New York City will require all of its municipal workers to get the coronavirus vaccine.
This will affect about 340,000 city employees making the city not only the largest employer in the U.S. to “require” the vaccine. The city has said it is not a “mandate,” yet they have said no workers will be forced to take the shot, but they hope the weekly pain and discomfort of the test will move people to get the vaccine.

All workers will have till September 13 to get it. This coincides with the start of public school. This move which seems to be fueled by talk of the delta variant has been circulated and as more people are tested the rise in cases which has grown upwards of 300% as more people are getting vaccinated. There is one positive sign the hospitalization rates are much lower. With already 65% of the adults in the city being fully vaccinated.

De Blasio has urged private employers to adopt similar rules saying, “My message to the private sector is go as far as you can go right now.” Indicating that public fear is high, and this is the time to push the vaccine. He also said, “I would strongly urge a vaccination mandate whenever possible, or as close to it as possible.”

De Blasio has said that in addition to weekly testing unvaccinated employees will be required to wear a mask indoors at all times.
