Is China taking over a major installation?

According to U.S. News and World Report China is interested in using Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan that was abandon by the Biden administration as the military under orders from President Biden abandoned the military base leaving cache of weapons and high-tech gear.

The base was the largest American run facility in Afghanistan. When the base was abandoned and overrun the numerous military assets on the base fell into the hands of the Taliban. According to the report China is assessing the feasibility of using the base as a forward outpost for the Chinese government.

According to sources in Bagram there is reports of some Chinese military planes landing at Bagram airbase. The Taliban has come out and denied it.

According to Yun Sun the director of the China Program at the Stimson Center occupying the base would be “attractive to China” according to the U.K. Daily Mail.

“Given their past experience the Chinese must be eager to get their hands on whatever the U.S. has left at the base,” she said.

Nikki Haley noted the strategic importance of having a staging ground in the area saying “I think you are going to see China make a move for Bagram Air Force Base.”

While the Taliban has officially denied that China is working with or taking the airport a spokesperson for the Taliban Aabihullah Mujahid has said, “China is our most important partner and represents a fundamental and extraordinary opportunity for us, because it is ready to invest and rebuild our country,”
